Great article by David Brooks. Interestingly this is also the Hindu philosophy of Karma. Most people in the west confuse Karma as being some form of you-get-what-you-deserve cycle. But in Hinduism Karma is a simple concept of "doing" or "acting" your tasks and duties without questioning their or your purpose.
